The assumption is backwards for commercial work
Winter is a real constraint for pouring concrete, for earthworks that need workable soil, and for anything that depends on curing. Commercial demolition is largely none of those things. Most of it happens inside a building that is still heated, and the work is unaffected.
Interior work is weather-proof
A strip-out on the fourth floor of an office tower does not know what month it is. The crew is inside, the material goes down a service elevator into a bin in a heated loading bay, and the schedule is the same as it would be in July.
Buildings are quieter
Fewer tenants operating, fewer trades on site, less traffic through the corridors. That usually means fewer phasing constraints and less after-hours premium work — so the job can move faster, not slower.
Frozen ground is an advantage on a site clearance
This one surprises people. Frozen ground carries tracked and wheeled equipment far better than soft ground does. Less rutting, cleaner access routes, less mud tracked onto the road, and materially less site restoration to pay for when the job is finished.
Shutdown windows
A building that empties out over the holidays is the best possible window a large interior scope will ever get. Work that would otherwise be phased over weeks around occupants can run continuously. If you have a big scope and a building that goes quiet in late December, that is the window — and it needs booking well before it arrives.
The genuine constraints
- Exterior concrete, backfill and anything requiring workable soil is harder or has to wait
- Utility disconnects can take longer to schedule around the holiday period — start them earlier
- Short daylight affects exterior work; interior work is unaffected
- Site access needs snow clearing built into the plan rather than assumed
